The unit talks about evaluation of students, the different types used and the reasons for doing so. It is important for both students and teachers to work in courses that are relevant the the students abilities. Hence the first stage of evaluation is the placement test to ensure the student is placed in the correct level and the students are all functioning at a similar level, a diagnostic test is also another way to access what a student or students know at the commencement of the course.
Periodic progress tests assist both the student and teacher to see how effective the lessons are and how the students are responding to them. If students are working towards external exams it is important that they have the opportunity to do practice tests , to allow them to see how close the standard they may be.
I have learnt the value of the placement tests and how much a teacher can evaluate about the student , not only their level but their interests and motivations for learning English . I can see by the sample placement tests the effectiveness of well thought out tests and how quickly students can be evaluated.
It was interesting to get a fuller understanding of the general external examinations and the different requirements each course serves.
