Common problem situations:
*First lessons: When faced with a first lesson the experienced teacher will not resort to the course book but will try to use activities that will achieve the following:
- Establish rapport between the students.
- Find out about the students.
- Find out about the students'needs/aspirations with English.
- Find out the English level of each individual class member.
*Warmers: Typical warmer ideas include:
- Hangman
-Tongue twisters
*Different levels: There are many ways to deal with this:
- Use different materials.
- Same material, different tasks.
- Don't do anything.
- Pair stronger students with weaker ones.
*Large class:
- Use worksheets
- Pair/group work
- Clarity.
- Choral repetition.
- Appoint group leaders.
- Dynamics.
*Use of native language
- Make sure the activities are at an appropriate level and that the students have the necessary language to cope.
- Make sure the explanations are clear to all class members.
- Encourage the use of English where appropriate.
- Only respond to English.
- Constantly remind the students.
*Reluctant students:
- Use plenty of pair work.
- Use controlled pratice.
- Use role-play
* I have learnt from this unit: We have to face with many problems in our teaching time so we have to find out the ways to deal with each one naturally, with a less threatening atmosphere. If our students feel comfortable and highly enthusiastic in the class, they will easily to improve their English level.
