This unit highlighted the relevance of structuring course work for evaluations that will be conducted inside and outside of the classroom. Diagnostic and progress examinations will take place inside of the language classroom, and will be created by the teacher for their students.
Diagnostic examinations will help the teacher choose an appropriate course text, and choose the appropriate selections from this course text that will best suit their students needs. They will also help teacher's identify possible created texts that can supplement the course text.
Progress examinations can not only measure student progress, but also the efficiency of the course text, and the created texts. If, midway through a unit, students have not progressed beyond their original competencies, then the teacher may evaluate there use of the texts and adjust accordingly.
Though practice examinations occur within the classroom, they are intended to prepare students for external exams. These practice tests offer an opportunity for students to see the relationship between standardized exams and what they are learning in the classroom, and similarly provide instructors with additional framework for their course design.
