Higashikurume, Japan TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
In previous unit test submissions, I have articulated my desire to be able to teach English grammar structures and forms without using jargon to explain them. Phrasal verbs are another key example of why I believe this may save time in the classroom, and eliminate some language learners' fear of practicing English.
These expressions: "put up with" "came up with" "picked up" appear to me to be simple expressions that may not translate to other languages, but do not have to be explained in such a dramatic way. I think the unit text does an amazing job of highlighting this possibility in the post script regarding phrasal verbs when it says: "teachers should... try to use them naturally during uncontrolled practice/conversation. If they're dropped in every now and then, they should become more familiar to the students. Students will then hear them in various contexts, and hopefully start using them naturally for themselves."
After reading the unit, and practicing these phrasal verbs, I really couldn't imagine myself having to teach them in a controlled lesson. However, this suggestion by the chapter was a great help in orienting my thinking of how to include them in my general planning.
