In the grammar there are two clauses, the "if" clause and the main clause and regarding to the importance of the meaning of the sentence which has to be satisfied, either can come in the first part of the conditional sentence. We have five conditionals : zero conditional - if/when + present tense + present tense; first conditional - if + present simple, will; second conditional - if + past simple/would/could/might + base form; third conditional - if + past perfect/would/could/might + have + past participle; mixed conditional - if + past perfect, would + base form. When we use reported speech, the main verb of the sentence is usually past; in general, the present form in direct speech changes to the past form in reported speech. The past simple can usually stay the same in the reported speech, or we can change it in to the past perfect.
