As I am Ukrainian, I had to learn English at school first, University after, etc. And in school we used to learn each new word from vocabulary using the phonetic alphabet, we called it "transcription". It helped us a lot in learning. As per my own experience teachers mouse modeling example wasn't helping me at all. I lost my Russian accent only while life communication with native speakers. You hear them, you copy them and you're losing your mispronunciation eventually.
