I've had the most trouble teaching relative clauses. This grammatical structure seems unique to Germanic and Romance languages. You have the defining relative clause and then the non-defining relative clause; the latter which seems like a wholly unnecessary construct when approaching it from a different language system.
The same can be argued for the passive voice. In Korean for instance, the passive voice is prevalent and in most cases people will understand you perfectly even when the agent is omitted. This fascinates and scares the students at the same time.
Getting the students to view these differences as an interesting notion is challenging but also rewarding. I know I still have a long way to go.
