Receptive skills are reading and listening. Productive skills include speaking and writing. Reading for a purpose allows readers to achieve an aim or goal (ex, directions). Reading can also be for entertainment. (They are not mutually exclusive. You can read for a purpose and also for entertainment.
Types of reading: Predictive skills, specific information (scanning), general ideas (skimming), detailed information, deduction from content.
Issues for English as a Foreign Language Learners while reading: sentence length, word length, unfamiliar words, unknown grammar
Issues for students while listening: Language is not ‘captured’ and may not be repeated.
Strategies for teachers: teach key vocabulary or grammar points before a reading, pay attention to appropriate texts for students, engaging topics, capture student interest, prepare tasks
