This unit has covered pronunciation and phonology.
Pronunciation is considered to be the most neglected skill in the aspect of the English language teaching.
It is often difficult to teach methodically and often teachers lack the training in this area which often results in most teachers lacking confidence to teach this area of the English language to their students effectively.
Students often share the same difficulty as the teachers when it comes to the learning of the correct pronunciation. Often the students struggle with this due to the teaching of their native language seems to interfere or obstruct the clarity of their speech and how they learn letters and sounds of the language they are trying to learn.
Phonology is the study of science analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds. these two terms are often used interchangeably, even though phonology is increasingly used to indicate the whole sound system of a particular language e.g : the phonology of the English highlights the importance to Word stress sentence rhythm and intonation as well as concentrating on the International phonetic alphabet and how it can be used in helping students, come to an understanding of the pronunciation.
An effective teacher will be able to recognise and consider the teaching of pronunciation in conjunction with phonology an integral part of the skill of teaching and learning of target language.
