Unit sixteen addresses the appropriate grammatical forms of conditional sentences and reported speech. Conditional sentences have two related clauses: the "if" clause contains a condition that must be satisfied before the action or state described in the main (consequence) clause can be realized. Each of the five main types of conditionals requires specific verb tense combinations for clarity and meaning. Reported speech involves a third party rendition of someone's direct speech; this too requires specific wording and verb tense combinations. Teaching ideas are included. Covering this material slowly and thoroughly is critical for successful student understanding and usage.
