Zaanstad, Netherlands TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Throughout a teachers career they will always come across teaching a new class and during the first session it is always important to build a relationship with the students and setting the tone for the rest of the course. These classes can fall into two categories. The New Group and the Existing Group. The new group comprises of students who don’t know each other and they aren’t familiar with the methodologies of the EFL lessons whilst in the existing group these students are already comfortable with and know each other and are familiar with the EFL lessons.
When teaching large classes it is important to know that you are allowing each student to be apart of the lesson and to have each student participating in the lesson. A common strategy for classrooms that are large is the use of worksheets and group work and also appointing group leaders. These worksheets will eliminate the need of trying to involove each student in a class activity and instead ensure the participation as each student will have their own worksheets to complete. Setting the students up in groups and appointing group leaders is also very effective as it helps allow students to assist in maintaining a sense of order as they focus on taking control of the appointed group.
Throughout the teaching you may also have times when you come across reluctant students. Where they fail to participate because of confidence reasons or maybe feeling intimidated. Strategies for problems such as this is pairing up students. This allows them to get support from their fellow classmate which can build confidence and interest in learning. Using role-play allowing the students to become more comfortable mentally as they are able to pretend to be someone else. An important one is the use of a tape recorder as they can use this device to record the things they might have an interest in saying outside of he classroom where they might feel more comfortable practicing and the teacher can also listen to what they are saying and help with carrecting where they might fall short.
