Wellington, New Zealand TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
Unit 20 is about troubleshooting, and deals with common problem situations in the classroom. It begins by stating that there are two kinds of group categories: new groups and existing groups, and goes on to briefly state the situations which teachers will encounter and must consider when planning a first lesson. Then the lesson proceeds to deal with preparing the first lesson, what it entails, and suggested activities. Next the lesson focuses on warmers and gives example of different games or communicative activities which can be used to get the students involved, have fun, and prepare them for the class. After that, the lesson deals with problems arising from having students with various levels within the same class, and gives a few suggestions as to how one can handle the situation. The following subject is large classes and the difficulties therein. Again, the lesson gives different recommendations for managing this challenging situation. Next, the use of native language in the classroom is addressed along with tips for handling this difficulty, followed by suggestions on how to help reluctant students who don't want to talk or participate in class. Finally, the lesson looks at how to handle a class that has students who have difficulties with listening, giving some practical tips. I found the activities for the section on warmers interesting and practical for classroom use.
