The unit made me feel more confident about teaching both children and business people, both big 'consumers' of English language learning. I was interested to see how the same positive behaviors exhibited by parents who effectively encourage their children to learn a native tongue, e.g., little correction, constant repetition, light-hearted attitude, use of 'original' songs, etc., can be used by a teacher his/her classroom. The reminder to be aware that children have a short attention span was also quite useful. With respect to teaching business people, I saw how a teacher can take a creative approach, address the fact that students are likely to possess different skill levels in English and have varied needs in terms of what they hope to get out of taking the class the teacher is offering. The teacher can interview students individually, after the class has been ongoing for period of time, to get a sense of how much they are receiving from the class and how to adjust the curriculum, going forward. A similar thing can be done during the first session of the class, to elicit information about what the students wish to learn, how much they know and what types of learning they need and want, i.e., speaking and writing, listening, grammar, reading and vocabulary. As with all units, I learned a great deal and, after reading and studying the material within it, I found this unit to be very helpful. It also boosted my confidence as a new teacher.
