When teaching beginners it can pose an intimidating thought at an initial point however it can also be a very fun and rewarding experience knowing the knowledge being imparted is being remembered. After reading the unit, I have learnt that there are different types of beginners. There is the Absolute Beginner that has no English whatsoever, the false beginners who has a little knowledge and has been exposed to the English language, the Adult beginner who has made the decision to learn the English language and is highly motivated to learn whilst there is the young beginner who knows they have to study and will have little motivation as they don’t see the immediate need to learn another language.
Teaching at the beginner level can be very effective through a methodological technique. Adapting to the situation is very important as it helps to make room for comfort throughout the process, having an aim is also important because trying to rush through lessons trying to cover a many topics won’t help but instead pace the lesson to a managed speed for the students based on their level. Group work is also a very helpful strategy in the classroom and also constant revisions and questions play a vital role. Giving homework helps as well as it will better allow you the teacher to understand how far along they are with what they have been taught as this acts as an individual work effort being carried out in their own space and environment. Motivation is also a key factor in the learning process for beginners in order to encourage them and help them to maintain focus and show interest in the lessons. Praising them and encouraging them and showing sensitivity to the students. A very important factor as well I believe is always focus on what’s easier to teach and learn and gradually groom them in the English Language.
