This unit explains the structure and usage of conditional statements and reported speech. When considering conditionals is important to comprehend the "setting" of the clauses. If the sentence is "real" or possible, the zero or first conditionals forms can be used. However, if the sentence is constructed in an "unreal" or hypothetical past situation, the second or third conditional may be used. Although it is worth noting that the third conditional is set in an impossible setting which can never occur, where as, the second conditional is only highly unlikely to occur. The conditionals may be hybridized where the context allows it. Third with second, second with third, and second with the first conditional may be crossed to create alternate meanings. Reported speech must be 'back-shifted' in tense to represent the probable time lapse that took place between reporting. Obviously, in cases where the information is directly reported and still true then identical tenses may be used. Pronouns and time expressions must be shifted to represent the perspective of the individual reporting.
