This unit highlights the potential difficulties a teacher may encounter in the classroom. Obviously, the initial lesson can seem to be very problematic, but a good teacher can see this challenge as an opportunity for building rapport with the students. Generally the first lesson should include things like surveys or questionnaires. This is an effective way to learn about each student and their interests, needs, goals, and respective language levels. No two students will have identical levels, as such, the material may be tailored to fit the skill of each student if needed. Pairing stronger students with weaker ones is also an effective way to help bridge this gap. Large classes can also pose a problem, because it is physical impossible for a teacher to devote enough individual attention to each student. Group work, worksheets, and choral drilling are helpful to overcome this challenge. It is important to give clear instruction to large groups when setting a task. Reluctant students can also be difficult to engage with. Usually they struggle with confidence or inability. The use of pair work, controlled practice, or role-play can help motivate students. Lastly, teachers should dissuade the use of L1 language in the classroom. A teacher should never respond to the native language of the students and make sure the material is appropriate for the students' levels.
