Lesson 16 discusses the importance on focusing on speaking and writing in the classroom. It is important to understand that speaking is broken down into fluency and accuracy, both being relevant when learning a language. In order to focus on both, there are controlled, guided and creative activities the teacher should prepare and implement when required. Although there are a lot of people that enjoy speaking the language, there are a large number of students that need a bit of motivation to get started. The teacher should be aware of these students and make every effort to make them feel comfortable enough to speak in public.
When it comes to writing, there are several aspects that are relevant, such as the student's handwriting, their punctuation or their spelling. It is important to understand that other languages have very different rules or even alphabets than the English language.
The most interesting in this lesson was the lesson plan at the end to focus on writing. When I worked as a teacher, I dreaded sometimes focusing on writing because of how much time it takes away from focusing on other subjects during class. However, I learned through this unit that there are good ways of including creativity and fluency when focusing on writing.
