Unit 13 focuses on pronunciation and phonology in the classroom. This is broken down into the intonation and the stress that English words and phrases carry. Intonation reveals the intention of a sentence, whether to make a comment or ask for a reply, while the stress tells the listener which part of the sentence is being emphasized.
It is interesting to understand how the pronunciation of a sound is broken down making the placement and the mode of pronouncing it extremely relevant. Although teaching pronunciation in the classroom can be a more difficult task, due to the complexity of it and the affinity of each student, it is important to focus on it in order for the students to develop these skills. There are several ways of teaching pronunciation in the classroom, such as phonemes, visually demonstrating the mouth placement and movements or simply with a tongue twister.
I found it very interesting to see the different ways we as teachers can help our students improve their pronunciation. I used to avoid using methods like phonemes in the classroom, as they can be confusing, however, it provides an additional aid when trying to learn.
