This unit discusses how to teach productive skills which are writing and speaking. The two main areas of focus are fluency and accuracy. Fluency applies more to speaking since conversations require more on the spot comprehension and understanding where as accuracy is needed when writing. Writing requires more accuracy because thoughts can be easily misunderstood when not written correctly. Writing is also typically over looked when teaching because more time is focused on speaking and understanding. With that said both productive skills are equally important as well as fluency and accuracy. Both productive skills should have a measure of accuracy and fluency. Some ways to teach accuracy is best demonstrated in the study phase where the correct way of speaking or writing can be ingrained in the students memory. One activity that helps with accuracy is drilling and repetition. Fluency is generally used during the activate phase and is less rigid because students can now freely use what they have learned but in a more relaxed setting and are often encourage to get creative which can help with fluency.
