Synopsis of Unit 13( Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology)
In this Unit, I learned about the importance of Phonemes and Phonology in general. I learned about pronunciation in general, intonation and stress; The latter two in details.
Regarding intonation.
The normal pattern of intonation in a statement is the rise/fall intonation( this intonation generally is used when the speaker has finished the sentence not willing to say something else)
The second most used intonation in English Language is the fall/rise intonation. This is usually used when the speaker would like an answer in return- from the co speaker or somebody else.
There are many ways to indicate and teach intonation:
1. Nonesense words
2. By gesture
3. Humming or Singing
4. The board
Stress in English Language
When it comes to Stress - Without knowing the intention of what the speaker would've wanted to express, we can literally use a sentence in Stress examples as we please. Because we do not know what the speaker might have implied.
Words in English have Stress. One word has only one Stress and cannot have two Stresses.
A fact on detecting Stress in English language is that: 'We can only use stress in syllables and not in individual consonants or vowels'
I believe that there are many ways to teach Stress in English language but some ways and methods that I learned in this unit are:
1. Contrastive Stress
2. Gestures
3. Choral Work
4. The Board
5. Stress Marks
When we teach Stress to students we rather have to consider accuracy and well thought comparisons with the examples we use.
Sound joining in English Language.
There are four major ways for sounds to join together in English:
a) Linking
b) Sound dropping usually at letters (t,d)
c) Sound Changing
d) Extra Lettering
Phonemic symbols are very important for an English speaker/learner because they indicate the accurate knowledge upon how the letters are pronounced in all the words.
The Phonemic symbols table contains of :
Consonants (Voiced)
Consonants (Unvoiced)
Vowels
Diphthongs
All the sounds in English language are explained by the Place of Articulation and the Manner of articulation.
This in general subgroups from the ARTICULATION in English Language.
There are some ways to teach articulation in the classroom:
The teacher shall never present to kids the option of self learned pronunciation. They might feel uncomfortable and most likely ( if they are beginners ) will mispronounce it. So the teach must generate the usage of his own example. This means dictation with a partner, visuals - by drawing mouth diagrams, Tounge twisters etc.
