Synopsis of the Unit 19; Teaching special groups
Teaching English is all about the comfortable connection between the students and the teacher. A good flow of conversing grammatically and being able to teach freely is the key idea behind teaching and distributing English Language to many people who show interest in learning it.
The previous Unit reflections have evaluated adult teaching classes. In this unit I learned some more detailed information upon teaching:
Beginners
Individual Students
Children
English for specific purposes; e.g. Business English
Each of these groups, are different but have many assets in common.
Briefly explaining ‘Teaching beginners’;
By itself, this group dissects in other subgroups;
1. The absolute beginner
2. The false beginner (which knows a little bit of language in previous learning)
3. The adult beginner (very motivated)
4. The young beginner (usually not very motivated)
5. The beginner without Roman alphabet
There are some highlighted techniques when it comes to teaching beginners and that is:
Be aware of the students’ needs, consider their ideas, make them feel important, praise them, use pair and group work, revise constantly, control your language, give simple and clear instructions and ask lots of questions
Teaching individual students
This is a group that has emerged on the recent years and become popular because of the dynamic life related circumstances. Sometimes the individual students desires to reach language learning success in a shorter time this is why he/she wants 1-1 lessons.
There are advantages in both sides.
Some advantages on the teacher’s side might be:
1. No mixed levels of the students
2. The needs of the student become clear
3. Highly motivated individuals
4. Developing a close relationship with the student
5. Close advising consulting and supporting
There are also many activities that become impossible to execute when 1-1 individual work but there are many other activities to fill the gap of a whole group.
Some activities might include; short stories, quizzes, videos, documentaries, analysis of books and texts, phrasal verbs, vocabulary from podcasts, articles in newspapers and other things of this nature that the student might like.
Teaching Children
Teaching English is fun and should be a happy time for the teacher. Children are usually honest, full with energy and they learn fast. One less favorite thing of teaching students is that they always lose interest and focus very fast. This means they get bored. This is why the teacher should be an entertainer and a pedagogy carrier at the same time.
Kids like it when the teacher behaves similar to them rather than a boring adult.
The teacher should be aware that;
Should commit- slower and clear pronunciation, lots of repetition, creativity, use of higher pitch and exaggerated intonation, positive responses and praise, call the kids by their name, make them feel important etc.
Teaching Business English or English for Specific Purposes/ESP
This teaching way/group is much different from the other groups because it requires specific language and it is much detailed. Usually the course books of this group are expensive and the clients usually pay much more.
This way of teaching can take place in different ways, for e.g :
1. One to one
2. In-company group
3. In- school group
This teaching group requires more formality and a quick reminder: The teacher is not there to teach them their profession and expertise ( which they already possess) the teacher is simply there to teach them English.
