Saint-Paul, Runion TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
It was interesting to read about the various methods used to teach English. Of course, I agreed with some more than others based on my own, personal teaching philosophy. For me, it is also better to combine various methods and consider the learners when doing so in lieu of simply sticking to just one in a teacher-centered way. However, I realize that my school focuses strongly on the communicative language teaching approach. The owner of my school strongly believes that enough exposure to native speakers of the language is the superior method for learning. I also enjoyed and learned a lot from the part on correction. I agree that correction has many components to consider and should be done largely in just the study stage of the ESA (engage, study, activate) method. I remember learning at my university about the difference between a mistake and an error and the importance of giving students time to self-correct. In my opinion, this review was particularly helpful. It is important to focus corrections on the teaching point, repetitive errors, and when understanding is compromised; not everything needs to be corrected as that is very demoralizing for students. I also learned some new ideas for games and activities that could be used during the study stage of the ESA method. One that stuck out to me and I am excited to use in my classes is The Box Game. It is a really unique and intriguing concept that I know one of my classes in particular would enjoy, as it is a bit like detective work! I know they will like trying to guess the language rule I am using in my answers! Overall, it was interesting to learn about the various methodologies used for teaching English and get some new ideas I can bring back into my classroom.
