Angarsk, Russia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
I enjoyed getting some new ideas of ways to teach vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. I know my students would definitely enjoy some of the proposed activities (such as gap-fill exercises, unscrambling exercises, debates, and role play games). I liked that it organized each activity into its appropriate lesson phase for me. This made the new activities easier to remember and I will be sure to use them in an accurate manner in the future. It was also interesting to learn about good teaching models for each topic. For example, perhaps with teaching vocabulary the ESA framework closely aligns itself and works very well, but when teaching language functions, a patchwork format would be more useful. In my past lessons, I do not think I was using these suggested formats, and perhaps it would improve the quality and effectiveness of my lessons to do so. I also liked the section on how to choose vocabulary. I agree that it is important to choose vocabulary that is relevant, appropriate, teachable, and frequent. It is also true that how easy it is for a student to grasp a new vocabulary word depends on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to: how appropriate it is, how similar it is to a student's known language or other known English words, and the word's spelling and pronunciation. I have noticed this in my class of international students. Students whose native languages are more similar to some English words tend to have an easier time with the vocabulary, as opposed to students whose native languages are more different from English. Overall, it was another informative lesson that enhanced and reaffirmed my knowledge.
