This unit primarily focused on the lesson materials used in the classroom, either supported by the school or created by the teacher. There are two types of materials use in the classroom, authentic and created. Authentic materials tend to be from the native country, such as magazines, newspapers, songs, and poems. Created materials are usually designed by the teacher and are meant to be a supplement to the course book. Both of these types of materials are essential to the classroom and to the expansion of the student's minds. The teacher might not be allowed to choose which course book is used in their class, so being able to replace, supplement, or adapt to the lesson with outsourced materials is important. Other than those options, a teacher might omit a whole lesson if they deem it necessary. There are advantages an disadvantages to using the course book, but the best use of it is in conjunction with the creativity of the teacher. If a teacher relies too much on the course book, then the class becomes predictable and the teacher becomes lazy. The best use is to be aware of the balance required in the classroom. If a teacher does get to choose which course book they will be using, they should look at a variety of things, including the price, availability, design, methodology and more.
