When I was in college, I was originally a speech pathology major and we had many classes on the topic of the four basic skills in every language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Due to that previous training, I was already familiar with the two receptive skills: reading and listening, as well as the two expressive skills: writing and speaking. I agree with the unit that all of the skills are equally important when working toward fluency in a language. For me, the most interesting part of the chapter was the discussion of the specialist skills. Of course I use all of these skills, but I was not previously fully aware of them. For example, I did not previously know that scanning is a skill used for finding specific information while skimming is a skill used to find the general idea. It was also interesting to learn about predictive skills, which have to do with predicting the content of an article based on the title, and reading detailed information. The section of the meaning of words and language was also useful. It's true that even if we are able to decode words or listen to them, we might not grasp their full meaning, which is typically very important. That's why teaching these skills is so important.
