I learned a lot from this unit. Materials can be divided into two groups: authentic and created. Created materials are created by the teacher specifically for that class, which is a benefit to them. They are things such as role-play cards and gap-fill activities. Authentic materials are things that a native speaker would hear or use/read. These are things like radio programs, podcasts, newspapers, articles, etc. These materials can be great motivators for students and there is much confidence to be gained; however, they are not ideal for beginner students due to their complexity and difficulty. Course books must be carefully selected, and supplemented. Good teaching is not just following a book all the time! Lessons must be adapted to the student and his/her needs. It is vital that the teacher selects a course book that is relevant, affordable, on-level, interesting, and equipped with good methodology. Course books come in various "shapes and sizes," including, but not limited to: a workbook, a CD, and the typical student/teacher books. The teacher should be familiar with these and be able to supplement the course book with additional materials to get a language point across to the student. The teacher should also be able to take out or replace information that is no longer relevant or useful. One thing that did surprise me, however, was the lack of consideration of the publisher. In the USA, many people believe that the publisher can slant the content of a book and therefore is important to consider. I also think when choosing a book it is important because we must be aware if the book is in British or American English. Overall, I learned a lot in this unit, since I do not use any course books at my current job. I now feel much more equipped to select and use one in the future!
