Grozny, Russia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This chapter was a little challenging. As a native speaker of English, there are just some things I never learned, but instead just do naturally. Conditional statements are apparently one of those things! I had never learned about the five types of conditionals: zero, first, second, third, and mixed. It had never even occurred to me that we use many of them for different things. For example: the zero conditional is for irrefutable statements, while the first conditional is for real statements and the second conditional is for unreal statements. Perhaps the most challenging part for me was the difference between the third conditional and the mixed conditional. Both of these are used for hypothetical situations and their consequences, a main difference being the grammatical structure. If this was difficult for me, I can only imagine how challenging it must be for some English language learners. It was also interesting to learn about direct and reported speech, as it was something I never considered- that the tenses change for reported speech in contrast with direct speech. Time expressions were another thing I had never given much thought to previously- that when backshifting the time changes and things like "tomorrow" become "the next day." I enjoyed learning about these topics as I foresee them being challenging for people learning English. I particularly enjoyed the teaching ideas as I now have some fun and engaging ideas of activities I could use with future students (such as what a question! and media interviews).
