I found this unit to be challenging. I had such a difficult time grasping the concept of phrasal verbs- which was something I had never even heard of previously! I learned through this chapter that there are three types of phrasal verbs: intransitive, transitive separable, and transitive inseparable. In the beginning, it was difficult for me to distinguish between transitive separable and transitive inseparable phrasal verbs, but I now understand that in a transitive separable phrasal verb, the phrase can be separated, while that is not possible with transitive inseparable phrasal verbs. The other part I found useful in this chapter was the component of modal verbs. It had never occurred to me previously that these stay the same and produce different meanings and degrees of politeness. For example, modal verbs such as "must," "have to," and "need to," give forth a sense of obligation of sorts, while modal verbs such as "may" or "might" are used for politeness. I tried coming up with many of my own examples and was really interested in seeing the meaning of my sentences evolve based on the modal verb I selected! I also learned about defining and non-defining relative clauses, which is actually something I do remember learning about in fifth grade. My teacher taught us about the importance of the commas in the non-defining clauses! Lastly, I liked that this unit discussed the difference between active and passive speech, as it is something I use, but have had difficulty explaining in the past. Overall, I thought this chapter was extremely informative and complex. I enjoyed it.
