Izhevsk, Russia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
I enjoyed the topic of teaching children because it is what I currently do. I agree that children need the activities to change frequently and to be engaging and exciting. They do have shorter attention spans in comparison with those of adults. Something I thought was really interesting in the unit was the comparison between multilingual and monolingual classrooms. It had said that multilingual classrooms are often in an English-speaking country, and that a benefit of these is their common language is English; on the other hand, a monolingual classroom is often in that particular country. As a teacher working in Poland, most of my students are Polish and it can definitely becoming challenging to prevent the use of the Polish language in my classroom. I enjoyed the tips of how to discourage this based on the activities and even the positioning of the teacher. Teaching beginners was also a unique topic for me because I've truly never done that before. The unit taught me to be clear, identify their needs, and motivate them. The section on motivation was good too, as I definitely can agree that it's valuable to create a calm atmosphere where the students feel comfortable to make mistakes without a fear of being over-corrected. Finally, the last section I felt taught me a lot was the section on individual lessons. This is another area I am not too familiar with so I enjoyed the tips, which included things such as using the student's own interests as motivation, using course books, and to not fall into the trap of only conversation, but instead build their vocabulary and/or work on their grammar, as well. I thought this chapter was light, fresh, and quite useful in teaching me about types of learners I haven't worked with in the past.
