Kamyshin, Russia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit was extremely interesting to me, as I never learned the actual names for the parts of speech that I use regularly (i.e. gerund, transitive vs. intransitive verbs). I teach 3rd grade English language learners, and some of these grammar rules come up. Now, I feel like I have a better understanding of why we use much with uncountable nouns and many with countable nouns. For instance, I have students who say, “I have very many money.” I’ve corrected them verbally, but was never fully able to explain why. Now, I feel like I could do a whole lesson on the subject with my class! Another rule that interested/surprised me focused on comparative adjectives. I’ve noticed one of my students in particular adding the suffix “er” to an adjective, rather than using “more” (i.e. intelligenter vs. more intelligent). Adjectives of more than two syllables do not have “er,” but have “more.” Lastly, I use intransitive and transitive verbs in my speaking and writing, without even recognizing the rules behind them. An intransitive verb is followed by a direct object, whereas an intransitive verb is not followed by an object, but just does an action. Some verbs can be used as a transitive verb AND as an intransitive verb. Overall, I feel that this unit was extremely informative, as now I am able to recognize and understand the rules for parts of speech.
