Kemerovo, Russia TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit discussed the different methods used to teach English. There are a variety of methods, such as grammar-translation, audio-lingualism, presentation/practice/and production, task- based learning, communicative language and teaching, ESA, etc. I agree with some methods more than others based on my own teaching philosophy. I think it is best to combine the methods when the task and setting is appropriate. However, my school is an international trilingual school and focuses heavily on the communicative language teaching method. I find myself often using the method, or a variation of the method, engage, study, and activate (ESA). It’s important that before beginning any new topic, the teacher pre-assesses what the students already know. This can be done informally or formally (i.e. thumbs-up/thumbs-down). This usually occurs before the study stage. When starting a new unit, the teacher engages the students. The engage stage is heavily focused on gaining the students’ interest through games, music, pictures, stories, etc. The study stage focuses on language construction. Students work on exercises like worksheets and the teacher provides the students with specific and positive feedback. It is during this stage that the teacher may correct student mistakes. In the activate stage, students are encouraged to use all the language they know in an activity such as role-play. They apply what they’ve learned to real-word situations. Lastly, I learned about some exciting games that can be used to engage students. My favorite game that I learned about that I will most certainly use in my teaching is the “I’m going on holiday and…” game. This would be an effective tool to not only engage learners, but to also review past learned vocabulary. In conclusion, I found this unit to be helpful, as I feel that I have more resources and ideas to teach my students.
