Unit 7 focuses on the methodology behind teaching vocabulary, grammar, and language functions. When teaching any of these areas, educators usually focus on just one, rather than all three. When students are introduced to any of these areas, they need to do four things with the new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it’s constructed, and be able to practice and produce it. The ESA approach is very useful when teaching these areas. However, there are certain frameworks that are more effective than others when teaching the different components of language. For example, the “straight arrow” is commonly used for teaching grammar or vocabulary. However, the functions-based lessons are often taught using the “boomerang” or “patchwork” approach. In conclusion, this chapter provided me with helpful information and served as a "refresher" from past experiences and coursework.
