This unit focused on receptive skills: reading and listening. These skills carry equal importance and should be incorporated in a lesson, along with productive skills (speaking and writing). People read and listen for two primary reasons: purpose and entertainment. For example, If I am looking at a map for directions, I am reading with purpose. If I am reading a novel before bed, I am reading for entertainment. Reading and listening require an active mind. When reading and listening, you need to use your background knowledge to interact and better understand the text. In addition to utilizing background knowledge, readers and listeners use a variety of skills such as making predictions, scanning, skimming, trying to understand everything in detail, and making a deduction of the text. It is important that when providing students with a text, that it is carefully selected and also engaging. Non-authentic texts are better suited for meeting the needs and abilities of the students. Additionally, the learning outcome(s) need to be realistic. As readers and listeners we do not just “read” or “listen,” but use a variety of skills. As teachers, it is essential that we help teach and strengthen these skills. For example, we can encourage students to interact with the text by making connections, highlighting the text for important information, and by drawing inferences by using background knowledge and context clues.
