Unit 16 focused on conditionals and reported speech. I knew about conditionals, but I was unaware that there were five types of them! Most students have difficulty discerning between first and second. First conditional talks about a real situation that takes place in the future, such as “ If I do my homework, I will get a better grade.” Second conditional refers to a hypothetical solution, such as, “If I married a celebrity, I would be rich!” Students also confuse the third and mixed conditionals. It is important to teach conditionals slowly and to use games to help the students practice. Games include splitting sentences, completing conditionals, and creating a chain of conditionals. Next, the unit discussed changing direct speech to reported speech. Reported speech narrates. This can be common in reporting and voice-overs.
