Unit 20 focuses on common challenges every teacher will most likely encounter in his/her career. It discusses how to effectively teach large groups, reluctant learners, and different levels. This unit encouraged me to reflect on my own teaching practices. When teaching a large group, choral work and group work is helpful. When putting students in groups, the teacher should plan ahead of time who is in what group and the individual roles or jobs for each student. This encourages each child to take on an active role in his/her work. When working with reluctant learners, the teacher should work with the child individually to better understand why the child is reluctant. Are there problems at home? Do they lack confidence? If so, the teacher may use praise, role play, and/or pair work to help build that confidence. Furthermore, when beginning with a new or existing group, it is essential that the teacher builds rapport with the students. Even though I have worked with the same group of children for three years now, at the beginning of each year, I start with a “warming” activity. This helps to ease the students back into the school routine. An effective teacher builds a community within the classroom and wears many different hats. It is not always an easy career, but it is most certainly a rewarding one.
