Teaching Pronunciation and Phonology
The unit looked at how intonation and stress are used to emphasis our speech, as well as techniques and activities that can help students gain confidence when using the language.
Description of terms :
Phonology- This is the systematic organization of sounds in languages.
Intonation -The variation in volume and pitch in a whole system whereas the Stress is more concerned with individual words.The former carries the message in the sentence,through
indicating the attitudes and emotions of the speaker, signalling the difference between statements and questions, and between different types of questions, focusing attention on important elements of the spoken message and also helping to regulate conversational interaction.
Teaching intonations can be done through nonsense words,using gestures,humming and singing.
Two very important rules to pay attention to when it comes to word stress is that ;
1.One word always has one stress not two unless the word is longer
2.You can only stress syllables in proverbs,not articles,pronounce and prepositions .
The chapter also included articulation,where place of articulation and speech organs were briefly discussed in order to have a better understanding of the manner of articulation. However I feel that it would have been easier to understand this part of the chapter better if the content was in video form .
