This unit contained many helpful resources and information about teaching aids in the classroom, how they can be used, and gave outside sources for more information and materials. The variety of teaching aids covered in this chapter ranged from typical items one might find in the classroom to more specific, language centered items and explained their use to benefit the teacher and students alike. For example, a whiteboard might be a staple in any classroom, it is common to expect to have one as a teacher, this chapter gave some tips for using the whiteboard to your advantage in the classroom, such as writing things up beforehand and covering some parts to reveal them as the lesson goes on. A similar method can be used with overhead projectors.
Cassette recorders and CDs/CD players were mentioned in this lesson as useful tools for students to be able to practice listening and hearing language; while videos or DVDs were mentioned to be similar but also giving students a visual to focus on. Both of these things are good to capture the interest of the students but also give them a chance to hear the language being used by someone other than the teacher. Videos or audio recordings can also be used for exercises in the classroom, to prompt discussions or be the basis of analyzing the conversation.
Course books, resource books, and worksheets are all useful in the classroom to provide exercises for the study portion of the lessons. Resource books are a tool for the teacher, while course books and worksheets are primarily used by the students and overseen or graded by the teacher.
Computers, online resources, and interactive whiteboards are also tools that can be present in the classroom to foster student learning. Online resources are something that a teacher would look into when preparing lessons ahead of time to get ideas for the lesson or possible teaching material, while interactive whiteboards and computers would primarily be used during the lesson. It should be recognized in these aids that the technology should be understood to be utilized to its full potential, and that there's always a possibility that it could be finicky or possibly crash. A prepared teacher is a good teacher.
Dictionaries could be considered an essential tool when learning a new language. There are many options for what kind of dictionary to choose. This chapter suggests considering the difference between a dictionary that translates words between English and another language, and dictionaries that explain grammar rules and usage of words. Dictionaries that are entirely in English can be beneficial as they provide all possible definitions of each word which can help the student understand the word in the context of the English language rather than translating in their head from their own language.
