This unit discussed conditionals and reported speech. This is an area where teachers and students should progress slowly, as there is a high probability of error and mistakes due to the numerous verb tense changes in both conditionals and reported speech. These are sentences that contain the words “if” or “when” and refer to the past, present and future possibilities. The term “conditional” refers to the fact that the “if” clause contains a condition that must be satisfied before the action or state is realized. The unit discussed five main conditionals: zero (refers to actions or facts that are irrefutable); first (uses the present simple “will” (but will can be replaced with “may, might, can should or must”); second (the verb “to be” used in base form); third (refers to a hypothetical past action and a hypothetical past result); and mixed ( combines the second conditional clause with a third conditional clause). The unit provided several fun teaching ideas for conditionals. The differences between direct and reported speech (aka indirect speech) were discussed, as well as how to direct to reported speech.
