This unit discussed the various types of equipment and teaching aids that can or should be used in the classroom. The number one piece of equipment that is necessary for teaching is the board. This can be a white board, chalk board or flipchart, but most teachers prefer the white board because it is less messy and easier to organize. The unit lists several principles to be followed for board work. Other items include interactive white boards (IBWs), but these can be very expensive and difficult to use; the overhead projector (OHP) which is easy to use but also has its disadvantages. Visual aids such as pictures, real objects and photos are encouraged as they can illustrate meaning more effectively (and quickly) than verbal explanation at times. The cassette recorder, CD player, video/DVD and video camera can all be used to accompany worksheets and work cards or course books. Video recorders can be used to record classroom discussions and/or group activities. The unit suggests that dictionaries are the single most useful tool available to students and can come in hard copy or online. Course books, resource books, copiers, computers and online resources are all useful teaching aids.
