This unit deals with pronunciation and phonology. Pronunciation involves different types of articulation – plosives, affricates, fricatives nasal, lateral and approximants. Articulation involves speech organs, place of articulation – palatal, palatal-alveolar-alveolar, dental, labio-dental, bilabial and glottal.
Phonology is the study, science, analysis and classification of the physical properties of sounds – phonetics and phonology are often used interchangeably.
The phonemic alphabet is studied in depth – involving the breakdown of the sounds – constants, vowels – and how they are put together to form the sounds of the words – not their English spellings.
The video portion is very good at breaking down the basic portions of this and also watching the extra video that shows an actual classroom where the teacher is teaching the basic concept of the phonemic chart is extremely helpful. Very difficult and involved unit.
