Teaching Special Groups is a unit full of valuable advice – I like the fact that we are advised “to think in terms of categories of beginner”. That really helps to put things into perspective. There are some very useful tips, especially “Focus on what is easy, not what is difficult”.
The list of Suitable 1-1 activities has some good ideas. I shall have to get a copy of Michael Swan’s Practical English Usage and familiarise myself with the Taboo words! Also of use, is the advice to over prepare as individual students may get through materials more quickly than groups.
I think I would need / want some classroom experience before embarking on the scary prospect of a room full of tiny tots and maybe a child psychology course! I do appreciate the Class discipline / management section and will remember that “it is much easier to start off firmer and gradually relax control than it is to regain control when it has been lost”. I expect that discipline issues can be a concern for a lot of new teachers.
The sample Needs Analysis form is interesting and will make a good template for use in the future.
There is a lot of good advice about teaching Business clients. Keeping detailed records will be of immense benefit if post-course reports are likely to be asked for.
