Being the final unit, Unit #20 was rather short, but I felt the content addressed a number of problems many inexperienced teachers may encounter. Many of the examples reminded me of when I took Spanish language courses and the various tactics my teachers used to build rapport, promote student talk-time, and manage large groups. For instance, my Spanish teacher used a pass the ball activity for the first day of class and even participated in the activity to build rapport, as the unit suggests. He had also paired stronger students with weaker students, focused heavily on group work and choral repetition, and made group leaders for various activities. All of these methods promoted ample student talk time and helped intermediate students like myself feel more confident about speaking in class. Learning a new language can be terrifying because everyone's afraid to make mistakes or sound stupid, but that's all part of the learning process. My Spanish teacher also always use warmers that reviewed last weeks material to make sure we felt we were on track and ready to proceed to the next lesson. The above examples have helped me connect my real-life experiences to potential problems I may face in the classroom.
