Unit 19 – Teaching Special Groups
Unit 19 summaries teaching English to more specialized groups. While lessons given to individuals or one-to-one lessons are very common in the EFL field. There is a growing demand for English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Business English would be an example of English for specific purposes. The other group specifically mentioned in this unit is Young Learners (YL). The Young Learners is the specialized group that I personally hope to work with. I have experience working with groups of children from a previous company I owned. I am hoping that my past experience will enable me to easily communicate and work with children. One thing I would like to quote from the unit about teaching children I found very interesting. “Don't cheat by using their native language. It removes the motivation - i.e. “If I wait long enough, I will hear it in my own language, so why make the effort to understand?” I whole heartily agree with this statement. I can attest to it being very true from my own experience learning a foreign language. When speaking french with someone before knowing if they spoke English. My brain worked harder, to find my french words, than it did if I knew they could speak English.
