There are four different type of conditionals with there own sets of rules. The Zero conditional is used when the action and facts or outcome is irrefutable, one can not happen with out the other. The First Conditional talks about a 'real' situation in the future that is possible but only once the action has been take. The Second Conditional refers to a hypothetical that is not true or unlikely to ever be true. The Third Conditional refers to a hypothetical past action or non-action the past consequence or result could have never happened. And lastly there is Mixed Conditional that combines the Second and Third Conditional, this type of conditional refers to the a hypothetical past action or state, and the present consequence. Direct speech should be repeated back as succinct as possible.
