Unit 20
Troubleshooting
Problematic situations and how to deal with them.
The first lessons
This are vital classes to build up rapport with the students.
The categories are:
New groups. Students don’t know each other and might be unfamiliar with EFL.
Existing groups. Students know each other and might be familiar with EFL teaching.
Activities that I will definitely use are:
Survey for high schoolers and Pass the ball game for children.
Warmer ideas that have become useful in my teaching career.
Hangman and Memory game. Oh yes! These games are outstanding for vocabulary, pronunciation, accuracy, etc. and it seems be be cool for either children or teenagers.
Different levels
In Panama, schools are not set to use the European framework so, having multi-level students are my bread and butter.
Some of techniques I’ve used from this unit are:
Pair stronger with weaker students. This is very helpful, but I rotate these groups every two weeks or three so the stronger students don’t dominate the weaker ones.
Same materials, different tasks. Very useful since the weaker students don’t feel bad about them having a different material. On the other hand, stronger students don’t get bored.
Use of the L1
I don’t allow students to speak to me in Spanish unless is absolutely necessary. When they don’t know how to say something in English they usually ask another student to help them. That way, they always try their best to speak to me in English.
Also, I try my best to keep my vocabulary one or two levels above theirs.
Reluctant students
Something that really helps me out is getting them to do pair work. They are much confortable speaking to just one student rather than infront of the class. With time, they get confident and motivated to speak infront of more people.
I feel so overwhelmed and happy right now. I can’t believe I finally finished all the lessons and I feel much more prepared for my EFL classes.
Thank you SO much ITTT.
