Unit 18
Modal, phrasal verbs and passive voice
Modal Verbs:
In the modal verbs sections I really appreciate the teaching ideas. Role play, rules and signs are very engaging activities that will for sure work on the Activate section of my classes. Although I have played role playing games before with the students; making them do “rules” and “signs” are ideas that I can't wait to do with my them.
Passive voice:
The passive voice is pretty much making the object, subject.
For example:
Active voice: Carol painted the car.
Passive voice: The car was painted by Carol.
This class in particular has proven to be difficult for many students. The most common mistakes are forgetting to use the verb to be or not using the appropriate article.
For me, it is very important to explain students that is all a matter of focus/attention. Who or what is getting the focus/attention is ultimately what makes them understand how to switch from active to passive voice.
Phrasal verbs:
There are three types which are:
Intransitive: can’t be followed by a direct object.
“He will show up”
Transitive separable: an object pronoun can only come between the verb and the particle.
“He will pick her up”
Transitive inseparable: the object comes after the participle.
“He will speed up the process once we pay the fee”.
A teaching idea I can add to this section is searching for a nice, modern song that students like and highlight the phrasal verbs that the song has. Then, explain the context they are being used on the song and lastly, sing it!
Thank you ITTT staff for this comprehensive unit.
