In learning about the grammar patterns behind reporting speech, I can see clearly how important it is important for learners to understand verb tenses well before they are able to accurately report speech. In my own speech, I can even make mistakes sometimes when it comes to reporting speech so learners should not be discouraged if their verb tenses aren't correct most of the time. Also, I never realized that English had so many ways to express conditionals. As a Japanese learner, I thought that Japanese had way too many conditionals which made it confusing to learn them. Now I see that English can be just as confusing for learners and I hope that I am able better to explain the differences in nuance between all the kinds of conditionals from my own experience with Japanese conditionals.
