Special groups such as beginners, children, professionals, one-to-one teaching require different teaching techniques. Motivation is essential for beginners whether absolute, false, adult, children, or those without a grasp of the Roman alphabet. This can be achieved through praise and encouragement, and avoiding over-correction. Teachers should make the lesson easy to understand by enunciating clearly and slowly, use simple instructions, visual aids and clear board work. They should also ensure a solid foundation through revision, homework, and by choral repetition and repeatedly playing an audio tape before resorting to providing the script or reading it at a slower pace. Teachers should encourage students to use English, avoid over-correction or rushing through the lesson, and instead give praise and focus on what is easy. On top of the teaching techniques for beginners, children also require a faster pace and an element of fun as their attention span is shorter. Hands-on activities and games with rewards are good activities for teaching and motivating children. Teachers need to take care not to have any ‘favourites’ as children are sensitive to unfairness. When teaching professionals, it is ideal to have knowledge of the company's business, the clients' duties, and both employer and employees' needs and wants so as to create relevant lesson plans and activity content that are relevant to the clients (and the contracting company). However, professionals may be tired during lessons, so homework and challenging lesson plans may not be suitable. They also need to be aware of group dynamics and avoid embarrassing their clients in front of their colleagues. One-to-one teaching tends to be more informal without a class setting, but the teacher will be able to tailor lesson plans specifically for the student’s needs and wants.
