Knowing the rules pertaining to parts of speech allows one to dissect sentences into understandable pieces and also construct new sentences that clearly communicate the message. By knowing the different parts of speech it is almost like knowing parts of a formula that is applicable in many situations. For example, by knowing what each word is classified as and the purpose of it, one can further form different sentences. Secondly, it also seems like English grammar has many exceptions that do not have set rules that one can follow. For example, there are many irregular verb forms such as beat --> beaten --> beating that don't apply any rules and people just have to know which can be confusing for non-native speakers.
