I was able to learn of different skills we use when reading, such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, looking for details, and deducting from context. I think being aware of these skills would help students become more effective readers because it gives them skills to extract the information they need. For example, if the students are only being asked for a general idea, they can learn to skim the passage. Another useful strategy I learned from this unit is pre-teaching vocabulary. This could help students add more words to their vocabulary bank as well as not feel insecure for not knowing specific words. I think this strategy could also be used to engage students in the topic for the day.
